Shillong, Dec 30 : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has issued a stern condemnation regarding the tragic demise of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old postgraduate student from Tripura, who succumbed to injuries following a brutal racial assault in Dehradun.

Describing the incident as both “heartbreaking and unacceptable,” Sangma emphasized that racial violence has no place in a civilized society. He asserted that citizens from the Northeast are integral to the Indian fabric and called for an end to the normalization of such hate crimes. The Chief Minister has demanded that the perpetrators face the harshest legal consequences to ensure justice and deter future occurrences.

Latest Developments and Case Updates

While the initial report focused on the condemnation, several critical updates have emerged regarding the investigation and the nature of the attack:

The Incident: On December 9, 2025, Anjel and his brother Michael were harassed by a group of intoxicated men in the Selakui area. The assailants reportedly used racial slurs such as “Chinese,” “momo,” and “Chinki.” When the brothers protested, the verbal abuse turned into a violent physical ambush.

Medical Severity: Anjel battled for his life for 16 days at Graphic Era Hospital before passing away on December 25, 2025. Medical reports revealed severe neurological trauma, including brain fissures and spinal cord injuries.

Police Action: Dehradun police have arrested five individuals, including two minors who have been sent to a juvenile home. Murder charges have now been added to the FIR.

The Fugitive: The primary accused, Yagya Awasthi, is believed to have fled to Nepal. A reward of 25,000 rupees has been announced for information leading to his arrest, and a special team has been dispatched to track him.

Political Response: Tripura CM Manik Saha has spoken with Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami to ensure a transparent probe. Additionally, the All India Chakma Students’ Union (AICSU) has called for the trial to be moved out of Uttarakhand to ensure impartiality.
