Krishna Sharma Becomes First Sikkimese to Earn PhD in Semiconductor Quantum Plasma Physics

Gangtok, 04 May : Krishna Sharma from Assam Lingzey in Sikkim’s 22-Namcheybong Constituency has made history by becoming the first person from the state to earn a PhD in Semiconductor Quantum Plasma Physics. He successfully defended his thesis titled “Instabilities in Semiconductor Quantum Plasma in Presence of Electric and Magnetic Fields” on April 29, 2025, at the Department of Physics, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT), under Sikkim Manipal University.
Sharma’s groundbreaking research, supervised by Dr. Utpal Deka and co-supervised by Dr. Rustam Ali, focused on wave instabilities in quantum plasmas affected by electric and magnetic fields. His work explored quantum phenomena such as exchange-correlation potential, spin forces, and particle degeneracy, uncovering crucial findings like stability gaps related to temperature and nanoparticle implantation. These discoveries open new avenues in the development of quantum devices and plasma-based technologies.
The PhD viva was evaluated by Professor Pralay Kumar Karmakar of Tezpur University. Sharma’s research has resulted in several publications in reputed international journals.
Krishna Sharma began his education at Assam Lingzey Government Senior Secondary School and later studied at TNSS School in Gangtok. He earned his B.Sc. in Physics from NBBGC, Tadong, graduating with a Gold Medal, and later completed his M.Sc. at SMIT, again securing a Gold Medal. He qualified for prestigious exams including UGC-NET with JRF, SLET, and GATE.
He currently serves as an Assistant Professor at NBBGC, Tadong, where he continues to contribute to the scientific community by mentoring students.
During the PhD defense, Sharma expressed deep gratitude to his mentors, colleagues, and the leadership of SMU, as well as the Education Department of the Government of Sikkim. He also acknowledged the guidance and support of his principals and department staff at NBBGC Tadong and SGSC Chakung. Most importantly, he dedicated his achievement to his parents, wife, and family, whose unwavering support sustained him throughout his five-year research journey.
Krishna Sharma will receive the Doctor of Philosophy degree during the upcoming convocation of Sikkim Manipal University.
