The official Twitter handle of the Dalai Lama released a statement on Monday, apologizing for the incident and stating that the spiritual leader often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful manner, even in public and before cameras. The statement added that the Dalai Lama regrets the incident and wishes to apologize to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for any hurt his words may have caused.
This is not the first time that the Dalai Lama has faced public backlash. In the past, his remark that if his successor were to be a woman, she would have to be “attractive” sparked controversy. However, he later issued an apology for his comment.
