Following several non-governmental groups, especially those consisting of students, have been urging for the adoption of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the region, given the uncontrolled rise in the number of unlawful immigrants in the area.
Manipur’s Chief Minister, N Biren Singh, declared on Friday that his administration is prepared to introduce the National Register of Citizens (NRC), but the Centre’s authorization is needed for this. During a press conference in Imphal, Manipur, Singh replied to inquiries by saying, “The state government cannot implement the NRC alone, as the Centre’s consent is required.”

Singh also discussed the Manipur State Population Commission (MSPC), stating that the state government had already formed it, and it would identify migrants residing in the state. “The Manipur State Population Commission (MSPC) has already been established by the state government. We have appointed members to it, and they will be in charge of identifying immigrants in the state,” Singh added.
