Gangtok, 4 Feb : Chief Minister and SKM Party President Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) on Tuesday described February 4 as a defining chapter in Sikkim’s political history, stating that the day symbolises the triumph of a people-led revolution that reshaped the state’s destiny.
Addressing party workers and supporters on the occasion of the 14th Foundation Day of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), the Chief Minister recalled the beginnings of the movement, which he said started as a small but courageous spark ignited by the “Golay Khema” revolutionaries. That spark, he noted, gradually evolved into a powerful mass movement that ended an oppressive system and restored governance based on the will of the people.
Paying tribute to martyrs and comrades who endured hardships during the struggle, Tamang acknowledged that their courage and sacrifices laid the foundation for the political transformation witnessed in Sikkim today. He emphasised that the movement was never the creation of a single leader or group, but a collective uprising driven by the people of the state.
“The revolution belongs to the people of Sikkim,” the Chief Minister said, expressing gratitude for the trust, support and blessings extended to the SKM since its inception. He clarified that coming to power was never the final goal of the movement, asserting that the larger objective remains systemic change to ensure justice, dignity and equal opportunities for all citizens.
On the occasion, Tamang formally announced the launch of the SKM’s campaign for the 2029 Assembly elections, setting an ambitious organisational target of strengthening the party across all 573 booths in the state. He stated that SKM aims not only to retain all 32 Assembly seats, but also to register victory in every single booth.
He added that the party’s real challenge is no longer political rivals, but the need to surpass its own past achievements and raise governance standards further. Reaffirming SKM’s commitment to inclusive and people-centric politics, Tamang welcomed new members who have joined the party, saying their participation strengthens the collective vision of building a Sunaulo, Samriddha ani Samartha Sikkim.
The Chief Minister also lauded the tireless efforts of core party members and workers who worked relentlessly to ensure the success of the Foundation Day celebrations. He extended appreciation to the organising committee, party functionaries, well-wishers, dignitaries and government officials for their cooperation and support.
Concluding his address, Tamang urged party workers to remain grounded in humility, compassion and selfless service, and to continue working unitedly for the welfare and aspirations of the people of Sikkim.
