LPG Shortage Sparks Panic Buying and Long Queues Across Gangtok

Gangtok, March 31 : A growing shortage of LPG cylinders has triggered widespread distress among residents, with long queues and uncertainty reported across Gangtok and nearby areas. The disruption in supply has affected daily life, as households struggle to secure one of their most essential cooking resources.
On Tuesday morning, scenes of chaos unfolded in several parts of the city, including 7th Mile, Tadong, and adjoining metro areas. Residents began lining up as early as 3:00 AM, hoping to receive cylinders from a delivery truck that was expected at dawn. However, delays in its arrival left people waiting for hours, with many returning home empty-handed.
According to local sources, the situation worsened as demand surged sharply amid fears of further shortages. Frustration grew among the public as limited stock failed to meet the needs of those in line. In several locations, the queues stretched for long distances, reflecting the severity of the crisis.
The supply disruption is reportedly linked to ongoing tensions in West Asia, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz – a critical global energy transit route. Any instability in this region often impacts fuel availability, including LPG supplies in India.
With LPG being the primary and most reliable cooking fuel for millions of households, the shortage has sparked panic buying and increased pressure on distribution systems. Adding to the burden, consumers are also facing rising prices, making access even more difficult.
Authorities are expected to address the issue and stabilize supply chains, but for now, the shortage continues to create anxiety and inconvenience among the public.
