Former Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu has confirmed that he will be released from jail on April 1, Saturday, putting an end to speculation about his premature release.
He has been in jail for almost 10 months in connection with a road rage case from 1988. According to reports, Sidhu will be released early due to his good conduct. His son and security team have already reached the Patiala Jail to pick him up.
Sidhu will address the media outside the jail at noon today. His release is expected to be a boost for the Punjab Congress, which has seen the exit of several senior leaders in recent months. The road rage case relates to the death of a man named Gurnam Singh in December 1988 after Sidhu and a friend assaulted him.
Navtej Singh Cheema, a Congress leader and former MLA, announced that he and others will transport Navjot Sidhu from the jail to his home in Patiala following his release.
On Friday, Partap Singh Bajwa, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, and Laal Singh, a party leader, visited Navjot Sidhu in jail, according to Cheema. On the same day, Navjot Sidhu’s wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who recently revealed that she has stage two invasive cancer, tweeted emotionally about “Navjot’s love for Punjab had driven him beyond the realm of any attachment.” Varma, Navjot Sidhu’s lawyer, stated that “a convict with good behaviour is entitled to general remission of one day (Sunday) a week, and it translates into 45 days of remission on March 31.”
