The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has recently signed contracts worth Rs 19,600 crore with domestic shipyards to procure 11 offshore patrol vessels and 6 missile vessels for the Indian Navy. In addition, the MoD has also signed contracts worth over Rs 9,100 crore for the procurement of improved Akash Weapon System and 12 Swathi (Plains) weapon locating radars for the Indian Army.
The Indian Defence Ministry has recently signed a series of contracts worth Rs 37,600 crore in support of the country’s armed forces, providing a significant boost to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. These deals include the acquisition of 11 offshore patrol vessels and 6 missile vessels for the Indian Navy from domestic shipyards, as well as the procurement of 12 Swathi (Plains) weapon locating radars and an improved Akash Weapon System for the Indian Army.
According to a regulatory filing made by state-owned aerospace and defence electronics company Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) to the stock exchanges on Thursday, the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed ten contracts with BEL for a total of Rs 5,498 crore to support the country’s armed forces. These contracts include the supply of 90 units of Electronic Warfare (EW) Suite Equipment for Medium Lift Helicopter to the Indian Air Force, as well as the maintenance of two squadrons of the Akash Missile System. Additionally, contracts were signed for the Indian Navy, including the supply of 1,265 units of Software Defined Radio, 1,178 units of HD VLF HF Receiver, and 12 units of Sarang.
In a filing made to the stock exchanges on Thursday, it was announced that the Indian Ministry of Defence has signed three additional projects with the Indian Navy: INS-SA, CMS for P17 and P28, and Varuna EW. These projects are considered flagship initiatives that demonstrate the domestic design and manufacturing capabilities of the Indian defence industry, led by BEL and involving the participation of other public sector, private sector, and MSMEs. The exchange filing further stated that these projects will serve as significant milestones in the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives of the Indian government.
The Indian Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) on Thursday, worth over Rs 1,700 crore, for the procurement of Next Generation Maritime Mobile Coastal Batteries (Long range) {NGMMCB (LR)} and BrahMos Missiles under the Buy (Indian) Category. The delivery of NGMMCBs is expected to begin in 2027, and these systems will be equipped with supersonic BrahMos Missiles, significantly enhancing the Indian Navy’s multi-directional maritime strike capability.
Furthermore, in a significant development towards achieving self-reliance in defence, the Ministry of Defence has also signed contracts with Indian shipyards for the acquisition of 11 Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels and six Next Generation Missile Vessels, at an overall cost of around Rs 19,600 crore.
