Former Punjab Congress chief, Navjot Singh Sidhu, who is a cricketer-turned-politician, was released from the Patiala Central Jail today, having spent ten months in detention since May 20 last year, following his conviction in the 1988 road rage case. Sidhu was seen walking out of the jail dressed in a blue kurta and turban, carrying a book in his hand.
Outside the Patiala Jail, a grand welcome awaited the 59-year-old Sidhu as numerous Congress leaders and supporters had gathered to celebrate his release. The supporters had arranged for ‘dhol’ players who were seen drumming to the beat and chanting ‘Navjot Sidhu zindabad’ in honor of their beloved leader.
Furthermore, Sidhu’s fans eagerly waited outside the jail to witness the grand welcome being accorded to the cricketer-turned-politician. They had even put up several posters and hoardings of Navjot Sidhu in various places throughout the city of Patiala to welcome him.
According to reports, Sidhu’s supporters are quite ecstatic about his release, and one of his supporters outside the jail said that the party workers were overjoyed. His release was possible earlier than expected due to his good conduct during imprisonment, as permitted under the rules.
His lawyer, HPS Varma, confirmed that Navjot Sidhu’s family received an intimation from the authorities regarding his release from the Patiala jail.
A tweet from Navjot Sidhu’s account, which is being managed by his team, also confirmed the news of his release from jail, stating, “This is to inform everyone that Sardar Navjot Singh Sidhu will be released from Patiala Jail tomorrow, as informed by the concerned authorities.”
