According to Dr. Satish Kumar, a consultant in Clinical Psychology at Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru, AI is focused on practicality and not emotions. For instance, when a person says “I am sad” to a chatbot, it may respond by suggesting the person do something they enjoy to be happy. However, this advice could lead the person to engage in unhealthy behaviors such as drinking or smoking, which could provide temporary comfort but ultimately cause harm. Therefore, Dr. Kumar believes that relying solely on AI platforms for mental health support can create a false sense of comfort.
