New Delhi, 25 March : Road Transport and Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari, recently reiterated that the government is working to implement a GPS-based tax collection system to replace the existing toll plazas. Gadkari stated that the government will introduce new technologies, such as GPS-based toll collection systems, within the next six months to replace the country’s existing highway toll plazas. Gadkari stated that this new technology is anticipated to reduce traffic congestion and charge motorists for the exact distance traveled on highways.
According to Nitin Gadkari, who was quoted by PTI, “The government is looking at new technologies including GPS-based toll systems to replace toll plazas in the country… We will bring new technology in six months.” To enable automated toll collection without stopping vehicles, the ministry of road transport and highways is implementing an automatic number plate recognition system (automatic number plate reader cameras) in a pilot project.
The Association Priest further said that state-claimed NHAI cost income is presently Rs 40,000 crore and it will take off to Rs 1.40 lakh crore 2-3 years. Additionally, he stated that while the average wait time for vehicles at toll plazas was 8 minutes in 2018-19, it has decreased to 47 seconds since the introduction of FASTags in 2020-21 and 2021-22.
However, there are still some delays at toll plazas during peak hours, so there is a need for significant improvement in waiting times at certain locations, particularly those close to cities and densely populated towns. The road transportation and highways minister emphasized the necessity of lowering construction costs without sacrificing quality.
GPS-Based Toll System
