Gangtok face acute drinking water crisis, tankers pressed for distribution

The state capital town of Gangtok has been facing a severe shortage of drinking water for the past few days. As a result, the authorities have started using tanker facilities to distribute water. The PHE Department has deployed Fire Brigade tankers to distribute drinking water at the heart of the town in MG Marg this morning to meet the emergent requirements of the general public. Long line of people were seen carrying containers to fetch water from tanker at New Market on Saturday morning.

Deputy Mayor Gangtok Tshering Palden Bhutia has urged the public to cooperate during this crisis. She explained that the pipelines were damaged due to a natural calamity at the source Rathey Chu.

Moreover , the hoteliers and restaurant owners are the most affected by this water shortage since there has been an increase in the flow of tourists to the state. This issue is not limited to Gangtok town only, as the same conditions prevail in the outskirt areas of the town such as Deurali, Tadong, and Ranipul where Gangtok’s water distribution network exists.
