Soreng, 24 March, (IPR): DC Soreng Shri Bhim Thatal and Directorate of Fisheries, Government of Sikkim distributed ‘Rainbow Trout seeds’ to farmers and beneficiaries of Soreng District under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) scheme for the year 2020-21 at Upper Sribadam, Soreng district.
The program also had the presence of the Joint Director, Directorate of Fisheries Department Shri Lobzang Lama, Assistant Director Directorate of Fisheries Department Shri Yowa Raj Sharma, Field Officers and Staff, Trout Rearing Cooperative Society Upper Sribadam President Shri Kal Bdr. Gurung and Vice President Shri Samdup Bhutia, Manager Shri Krishna Kumar Gurung, Fish Farmers Producers Organisation (Fins Club) CEO Shri Arpan Gurung along with more than 30 Fish Farmers of Upper Sribadam.
DC Soreng also visited the Live Fish Vending Centre of Sribadam and the Trout Hatchery House of Shri Kal Bdr. Gurung. He also added that Soreng as an Aspirational District focused on five elements including Health and Nutrition, Education, Financial Inclusion and Skill Development, Infrastructure, and Agricultural and Water Resources in which Fisheries and Fish Farming indulged three elements.
DC Soreng directed the Directorate of Fisheries to provide details about the schemes, Programmes, and activities to School students especially to standard 9 to 12 and Teachers, staff along with SMC members so that the activities of the Directorate disseminate in the villages swiftly.
As informed by the AD (Fisheries), a total number of 15 beneficiaries received 2000 numbers of Rainbow Trout seeds which cost Rupees 20 for each seed. He also informed that more than 60% of the Upper Sribadam habitant are involved in Rainbow Trout Farming for their livelihood.
Progressive Farmers from Upper Sribadam said that 1 Raceway contains 500kgs of Rainbow Trout and the annual turnover is approximately 4 lakhs from each Raceway. As mentioned by the Official from the Directorate of Fisheries Department, Sikkim is the Second highest producer of Rainbow Trout Farming in India after Jammu and Kashmir.
