On April 13, Uttar Pradesh Police engaged in an encounter with Asad Ahmed, a murder suspect and son of former mafia leader turned politician Atiq Ahmed, in Jhansi, a city in the northern Indian state. Asad and Ghulam, who was a shooter in Atiq Ahmed’s gang, were wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case in Prayagraj, which was captured in CCTV footage. Both were killed during the encounter with the Special Task Force of the UP Police.
UP Special Director General (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar confirmed that Asad and Ghulam were wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case and had a reward of Rs 5 lakh each. The UP STF team, led by Deputy SP Navendu and Vimal, recovered sophisticated foreign-made weapons from the suspects.
Umesh Pal, a lawyer, and two police security guards were shot dead outside his home in Prayagraj’s Dhoomanganj area on February 24 this year. Pal was a key witness in the 2005 murder case of the then BSP MLA Raju Pal. Based on a complaint filed by Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya Pal, a case was registered against Atiq Ahmad, his brother Ashraf, Asad, Ghulam, and others under sections 147, 148, 149, 302, 307, and 506 of the IPC.
The news of Asad’s death was met with relief by Shanti Devi, Umesh Pal’s mother, who referred to it as a tribute to her son. In the meantime, a Prayagraj court sent Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf to 14-day judicial custody on Thursday in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case. They will be held at the Naini jail in Prayagraj until April 26.
