09 Mar, Gangtok (PIB) : Media Workshop Vartalap in Gangtok was successful in getting a good response from among the media persons of Sikkim. The Workshop, which was held at the Janata Bhavan auditorium in Gangtok today was attended by journalists from not only the capital town of Gangtok but from other parts of the State including Rongpo, Singtam and other remote areas. The day long workshop which was held in the State Capital for the first time by PIB Gangtok, was inaugurated by Senior Journalists of Sikkim like Smt. Mala Rana Patro, Shri Bijoy Bantwa, Shri Padam Chhetri and others.
All the veteran news persons including Shri Bantwa and Shri Chhetri, highlighted the financial crisis faced by the media world in Sikkim which, according to them, lacks national focus most of the times. The newspapers of Sikkim always face financial problems due to a number of factors including lack of patronage by the trade and industry which is a regular phenomena in the other parts of the country and so they have to depend fully on Government Advertisements only. Shri Josesh Lepcha, The President, Press Clubo of Sikkim requested PIB to come out with innovative ideas to help the media in this North Eastern State. Thanking the organisers, he mentioned that the media persons of Sikkim lack in resources, both financial and logistics as well and so are not able to flourish. He also requested PIB to highlight the facilities provided by them for the welfare of media persons.
Shri C.K.Dorjee, former Director, PIB Gangtok, described the functions and activities of PIB and stressed on the role of dissemination of information and helping the journalists to take part in National Level Conferences held in different parts of the country. Urging the media persons to take a holistic view, he pointed out that the media persons should have no bias in regards to reporting. Shri Partha Ghosh, Deputy Director, PIB Kolkata, described the pros and cons of the Journalists Welfare Fund so that the news persons in need may utilize the opportunity. He also highlighted other activities of PIB and requested media persons to make use of the library in PIB Gangtok for their own benefit, free of cost and this gesture was appreciated by the media persons. He also showed the media persons the PIB Website with the help of a projector and described how PIB Website could be utilized for finding news item. Dr. Phumzey Denzongpa, State Immunisation Officer, Government of Sikkim addressed the workshop on the status of implementation of New Mission Indra Dhanush in the state of Sikkim which according to her, was able to reduce infant mortality rate from 16 in 2015-16 to 09 in 2016-17 due to better implementation of immunisation schemes like New Mission Indra Dhanush.
Shri Sudipto Sengupta, a well known media person from Kolkata in his address, prescribed the ways and means as how to utilise PIB items, features and other materials for making a good news story both in print and electronic media. The workshop concluded with an interactive session in which Shri Sudipto Sengupta and Shri Partha Ghosh responded to various queries of the media persons. Altogether 45 media persons including six women participated in the workshop which became so lively and participative in nature that it was appreciated by most of the media persons present.
