World Health Day 2016 observed in Sikkim

07 Apr, Gangtok (IPR) : The Chief Minister Mr. Pawan Chamling who is also the Chairperson, State Health Mission chaired the 1st meeting of State Health Mission on the occasion of World Heath Day at Chintan Bhawan here in the capital today.

The theme for this year’s World Health Day was “Beat Diabetes”. (Scale up  prevention, strengthen care, and enhance surveillance)

Diabetes is a chronic, progressive noncommunicable disease characterized by elevated levels of blood sugar. It occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough of the insulin hormone, which regulates blood sugar, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.

The highlight of the programme was the Kayakalp award (launched last year by Union Health Minister Mr. J.P Nadda, it’s an initiative for award to Public Health Facilities). On the occasion the Chief Minister Mr. Pawan Chamling also gave away Kayakalp award to District Hospital Singtam.

The Chief Medical Officer of the Hospital received  a cheque of Rs 50 Lakhs  and a certificate, whereas District Hospital Namchi took the runners up award and were presented with a cheque of Rs 3 lakhs and certificate.

Speaking on the occasion the Chief Minister congratulated both the district hospitals for winning the award and hoped that they will continue to excel and serve people with their good work and get inspired and encouraged by such awards to even serve better.

Talking on the theme “Beat Diabetes” the Chief Minister expressed his concern on how India is being called the diabetic capital of the world and how this noncommunicable disease is also raising its ugly head in state of Sikkim with almost 17,000 patients.

He appealed to the doctors to find some solutions to keep the disease in check in the state. Healthy, wealthy and happy Sikkim is what I want to see, the Chief Minister stated, while asking people to lead a balanced life in order to have a healthy and happy life, for which right habits and right environment is of utmost importance.

Awareness about health and healthy lifestyle needs to be spread all around, right from Secretary Health to ASHA worker can take up this task to inform and educate people, Mr. Chamling added.

The government has been very committed and concern to give best health care to the people of Sikkim and therefore programmes like CATCH was launched in the state in-order to make every citizen of the state healthy and disease free, he informed.

During his speech the Chief Minister also expressed his concern about fertility rate in Sikkim and stated that it needs attention, this can be a cause of concern in future; therefore doctors and Health Officials should come forward with suggestion and ideas to tackle it.
The Chief Minister also urged for optimum utilization of infrastructures in health sector in-order to make Sikkim healthy and happy state.

Mr. Arjun Kumar Ghatani the Minister for Health who also addressed the gathering briefed about the history of world health day and informed that there are about 422 Million people suffering from diabetes world over.

He also highlighted on various works done by the government in the health sector and mentioned about CATCH programme which is not only very, very innovative and effective but also a brain child of the Chief Minister.

Earlier the meeting began with welcome note, introduction and overview of National Health Activities by Director General cum Secretary Dr. Kuman Bhandhari. During his address he also credited good governance of Mr. Chamling led government for Sikkim doing very well in health sector.
