Sikkim Students Turns Waste Into Valuable Itineraries and Showpieces
31 Oct, Gangtok (IPR) : Sikkim took National Sanitation Campaign to another level, after very innovative Walkathon, now it was turn to make money from waste. Rural Management & Development Department (RMDD) who has been initiating various programmes for month long National Sanitation Campaign came up with ground breaking idea of making money from garbage and encouraged the programmes in schools.
The exhibition cum sale of the products made out of garbage by 18 schools from all over Sikkim and couple of NGOs was held in M.G Marg here in the capital today, where Minister for RMDD Mr. S.B Subedi visited the stalls and appreciated the products and the idea in making use of garbage in making products and in process making money.
The department had also initiated various other programmes like Selfie with garbage, Slogan writing competition, debate and elocution contest for students on National Sanitation Campaign.
The final of state level debate completion for the colleges and elocution competition for the schools were held at Chintan Bhawan, here in the capital today.
The Minister RMDD Mr. Subedi graced the occasion as the chief guest where he was amazed to too see how students and the younger generation from the state are aware about the campaign and how they are initiating to achieve the target, through their speech and arguments during debate, where the topic of discussion was “Sikkim can achieve Swachh Status well ahead of 2nd October 2019”
Eight finalists, four for the motion and four against the motion battled for pole position, where the speakers from various colleges from Sikkim placed their arguments for and against the motion, in the end it was Ms. Snehalata Choudhary and Master Prakash Natrazan both from Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT) were adjudged best speaker for the motion and against the motion respectively.
In the inter school elocution competition four finalists from each district battled for the top spot where Master Paul Rai of Namchi Sr Secondary School with his flawless speech filled with correct datas not only impressed the judges but the audiences too and bagged the top spot.
The Minister Mr. S.B Subedi gave the trophies to the winners, he also handed away the prizes for the Selfie with garbage completion which Youksom Sr Secondary School from West Sikkim bagged and in the Solgan writing competition Paljor Namgyal Girls Sr Sec School bagged the first prize, whereas Holy Cross School and Tashi Namgyal Academy were adjudged 2nd and 3rd respectively.
The Minister also gave away the prizes for Walkathon winners in boys and girls category where Master Rahul Sharma of West Point Sr Sec School got the first prize for winning the walkathon competition, Master Karma Tshering of Rongyek School and Master Hemant Bagdas of Penlong School went home with 2nd and 3rd prize.
In the girls section Ms. Chandrakala Sharma of Deorali Girls Sr Sec School bagged the first prize for winning the competition whereas Ms. Neel kumara Subba of West Point Sr Sec School and Ms Pempa Doma bagged 2nd and 3rd prize respectively.
In his short and crisp address Minister Mr. Subedi expressed his joy to learn that the students and younger generation of the state are now getting ready to take the baton from their elders. He also appealed to the students to work hard and do soul searching in order to usher themselves towards the right direction, while distancing themselves from negativity and various other distractions.
Times are tough and competition acute therefore each and everyone one us including students should armor themselves with knowledge and education and should never shy away from working hard, Mr. Subedi stressed.
Minister Mr. S.B Subedi also administered oath on the occasion, the day also marked 140th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel first Dy. Prime Minister and Home Minister of India and who was also instrumental in uniting India. The day is being observed as National Unity Day across the country.
Earlier the programme began with the welcome note by Secretary RMDD Mr. D.R Nepal where he spoke about the various initiatives taken by the government and the department in order to achieve swachh status while informing how the vision and innovative ideas of the Chief Minister Mr. Pawan Chamling has been instrumental in Sikkim bagging various awards in fields of environment and cleanliness.
A documentary film on the initiatives taken by the department of Rural Management and Development was also screened on the occasion.
The function came to an end with the vote of thanks by Deputy Secretary RMDD Mr. Satyen Pradhan.
