Sikkim observed ‘World Tourism Day 2016’ with galore
27 Sep, Namchi (IPR) : World Tourism Day themed ‘Tourism for all, promoting universal accessibility’ was celebrated at Indian Himalayan Centre for Adventure and Eco-Tourism (IHCAE), Chemchey today. Area MLA cum SLA Speaker Mr. K. N. Rai graced the occasion as the Chief Guest alongside State Tourism Minister Mr. Ugen T. Gyasto as Guest of Honor. They were accompanied by Officials, various tourism stakeholders, panchayats of the surrounding area and general public.
At, the onset of the program the Chief Guest alongside the Guest of Honor visited various stalls set up at the IHCAE premises.
Addressing, the gathering Chief Guest SLA Speaker Mr. K. N. Rai extended his warm wishes on the occasion of World Tourism Day, 2016. Elucidating, about the theme of this year’s World Tourism Day which is ‘Tourism for all, promoting universal accessibility’ Mr. Rai emphasized that everyone has an equal right to access the essential fundamentals of tourism. In this regard, Mr. Rai highlighted about the terrain that Sikkim is infused with and urged the tourism stakeholders to propose smooth accessibility in terms of transport system, utilizing of public services, communication channels to be made universally accessible for the visiting tourist. The Chief Guest also spoke about the various flora and fauna that Sikkim is endowed with and further advocated the youths to aggressively develop and promote Sikkim as an ideal tourist destination to be visited as the tourism sector is one of the most economically viable industry globally and domestically.
Speaking, on the occasion State Tourism Minister Mr. Ugen T. Gyasto termed the World Tourism Day celebration at Chemchey as a historic one. Mr. Gyasto underlined about the substantial contribution provided by the State Government for development and promotion of various kinds of tourism available in Sikkim. Explaining that the tourism department in the state acts as a facilitator in advancement of tourism he encouraged the youths of the state to build productively the field of tourism and position Sikkim in the forefront by providing qualitative and effortless service. Additionally, the tourism minister updated that Sikkim has garnered various accolades and awards when it comes to tourism and encouraged the attendees to maintain the momentum of achieving honour in the future.
Chief Administrator, IHCAE Ms. Sarala Rai briefed about historical background of IHCAE. Ms. Rai also officially launched new trekking route and Khangchedzonga Parikrama, the base for the trekking route will be IHCAE and the routes are namely Kitam Bird Sanctury, Solophok Trek from Majhitar Jorethang, Jor Pokhari, Tendong Hill and trekking route from South to North Sikkim.
Mr. H. S. Chahuan, President Indian Mountaineering Federation of India (IMFI) gave a presentation on ‘Sikkim Adventure Tourism’ and underlined that Sikkim has a huge potential which can be explored extensively under adventure tourism. Mr. Chahuan also highlighted various innovative ideas regarding trekking in and around Sikkim in order to boost tourism. In addition, he also informed that IMFI would collaborate in future with the Sikkim State Government in expanding the adventure tourism aspect in the state.
Mr. C. Zangpo Secretary Tourism also addressed the attendees wherein he detailed about the aim and objective of World Tourism Day. He also updated, that impetus should be laid on conserving the rich bio diversity of the state while promoting tourism.
The program also included various presentations on different kinds of tourism existent in the state. The Chief Guest and the Guest of Honor also felicitated a number of stakeholders who has aided in enhancing of tourism in Sikkim.
The Chalamthang Homestay located under Namthang Rateypani constituency in South Sikkim owned by stakeholder Mr Amrit Sharma bagged Award for Best Homestay in Sikkim.
