Jan, Gangtok (IPR) : It was just a last year on the same day when the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri. Narendra Modi declared Sikkim as the first organic farming state in the country, it was huge achievement as well as encouraging vibe for us and it also created a massive brand name for Sikkim, the Chief Minister Shri. Pawan Chamling informed, while speaking on the occasion of 1st Sikkim Organic Day.

The Government of Sikkim had decided to celebrate 18th January, every year as Sikkim Organic Day and the 1st edition had the theme “Transforming Agriculture for Better World”.
In function organized at Saramsa Garden, Ranipool, East Sikkim, the Chief Minister graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
The main attraction of the Sikkim organic Day celebration at Saramsa Grden, was organic crop display, exhibitions cum competition of flowers, vegetables and fruits and over 300 farmers from all over the state of Sikkim participated in the daylong event.
While addressing a huge gathering at Convention hall in Saramsa Garden the Chief Minister Shri. Pawan Chamling while highlighting the journey, hardship and the hindrances which his government had to face to achieve the status of Organic State stated that people of Sikkim especially the youth and the younger generation should take up organic farming as a profession as it has all the potential to open a huge avenue for sustainable development.
Sikkim going organic, chemical free and eco-friendly was not easy, when we go organic and chemical free the soil also become chemical free and the food grains, fruits and vegetables produced from it will be very healthy and can yield a very good price in the market and it was also our small effort to give a message to the world about the benefits of going organic and chemical free, Shri. Chamling stated.
He also appealed to each and everyone present from farmers to government officials to general public to spread awareness about the benefits of organic farming and becoming chemical free, creating awareness and educating people on organic farming can attract people especially the younger generations to take up agriculture as a profession, Shri. Chamling added.
We should try and take full advantage of the brand name which the state of Sikkim has been able to create after going organic, what my government wants to give the people of Sikkim is not only clean and beautiful towns and villages but we want to give the people beautiful and secured future, the Chief Minister stressed.
Minister for Food Security & Agriculture Development and Horticulture & Cash Crop Development Departments, Shri. Somnath Poudyal who also addressed the gathering stated that it’s a huge achievement for the state of Sikkim that Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi declared Sikkim as an organic farming state and also spoke about Sikkim’s achievement in national and international platforms, which has brought Sikkim a tremendous recognition.
The Minister also credited the Chief Minister for the making Sikkim organic farming state and informed that it was Shri. Chamling’s vision and his brain child to go organic and chemical free.
The Addl Chief Secretary Shri. S.C Gupta in his key note address also credited the Chief Minister for the achievement which Sikkim has got in form of organic state.
Shri. Khorlo Bhutia Principal Director cum Secretary, Horticulture & Cash Crop Development Departments presented a technical report and power-point presentation of organic mission.
Earlier the Chief Minister accompanied by the Minister for Food Security & Agriculture Development and Horticulture & Cash Crop Development Departments, Shri. Somnath Poudyal along with the officials from the department visited the stall which exhibited organic fruits, vegetables, flowers and food grains.
On the occasion the Chief Minister Shri. Pawan Chamling also presented prizes to the winners under various categories of best vegetable, fruits and flowers.
He also presented special awards to Progressive Farmers and also distributed tokens of Krishi Loan to the farmers of the State.
The function was attended by the Deputy Speaker, Sikkim Legislative Assembly Shri. Sonam Gyatso Lepcha, Cabinet Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries, Chairpersons, Advisers, Mayor, Deputy Mayor, HODs of various government departments and host of other dignitaries.
