IPR Min inaugurates two day long Express Tourism and Hospitality Expo 2016
5 Nov, Gangtok (IPR) : The Minister for Health and Information and Public Relations Department Shri A.K.Ghatani inaugurated the two day Express Tourism and Hospitality Expo 2016 organized by New Indian Express at Chintan Bhawan, today.
The function also had the presence of Ms Namrata Thapa Special Secretary IPR Department, Shri C.P.Dhakal Special Secretary Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, tourism stakeholders from Sikkim and representatives from Tourism Boards of Nepal Tourism, Kerala Tourism, Telengana Tourism and Coffee Board of India, and students from various schools, colleges and university.
Minister in his address welcomed everyone to the expo in Sikkim which has brought people together from all over the country and neighboring country as well. He stated that the growth of Tourism in Sikkim has been remarkably outstanding and tremendously gratifying. It was always the dream of our Chief Minister Mr. Pawan Chamling to transform Sikkim into a World Tourist Destination with tourism as the key sector in developing the State’s economy. Tourism has been always promoted in the State by adopting multiple approaches like neat and clean environment, tourist friendly amenities, he said.
He also added that under the guidance of the Chief Minister, Sikkim has taken excellent steps towards sanitation and health. Gangtok was recently recognised as the “Cleanest Tourist Destination” by the Ministry of Tourism, India.The Rural, Eco, Adventure and Pilgrimage Tourism hold Sikkim in powerful side. The Government has given equal priority to preserve and promote pilgrimage tourism in the state. The government has built larger than life projects like Siddhesvara Dham at Namchi comprising of 12 Jyotirlingas and Char Dham and other notable religious destinations. Adding to all these, the commencement of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Nathula in 2015 has added further importance to the tourism sector in Sikkim, he added.
Recently, Sikkim was also declared as the Safest State for working women by American Think Tank Center for Strategic and International Studies Association, he added.
Earlier, Smt Namrata Thapa, Special Secretary, IPR Department highlighted on the role of media in Sikkim in general and IPR Department in particular which works towards fostering better understanding of Sikkim as a potential tourism destination. The government of Sikkim has gained numerous recognition and accolades in diverse fields and is particularly well known as an eco- tourism destination. The eco friendly policies of the government have given an added feature to tourism in the state.
Special Secretary Tourism and Aviation Department Shri C.P. Dhakal while addressing the function congratulated New Indian Express for organizing such an event in Sikkim. He also briefed about the Tourism Sector in Sikkim and how it has been playing a great role in adding to the State’s popularity and economy.
Earlier, Mr. J. Vignesh Kumar, Senior Vice President of The New Indian Express Group in his welcome address gave a rief outline of the objective and importance of the event.
The function was followed by the panel discussion on the topic “Capacity Building and Career Options in Tourism” .
Besides, the Tourism Boards of Kerala, Telangana, Nepal and the Coffee Board of India have put up stalls at the venue which will cater to tourism enthusiasts on the 5th and 6th of November.
