Inter Police Badminton Championship 2015
06 Dec, Jorthang (IPR) : The two day long 1st Inter Police Badminton Championship 2015 themed “Cops with Shuttle, Always be shuttle in a shuttler” organised by South District Police concluded at Jorethang Badminton Court, Parking Plaza today. Present as the Chief Guest on the closing day was Daramdin MLA cum Parliamentary Secretary Mr. D.N Sherpa accompanied by Minister of PWD and Culture Mr. G.M Gurung who was present as the Guest of Honor. Others present in the event were SDM Jorethang Mr. Tenzing D. Denzongpa, Chairman Jorethang Municipal Council Mr. Tika Gurung, Senior S.P, Mr. Pravin Gurung, Panchayats, Senior Officials from South District, Police Personnel alongside a a large assembly of badminton enthusiasts.
SDPO Jorethang and President of Jorethang Badmintion Association Mr. K. B Gurung addressed the gathering whereupon he underlined the objective of organising the event which strives towards channelizing the potential of the police force while also bringing them together for recreational pursuit. He also explained how the police force works tirelessly to maintain law & order in the society and events like this act as a foreground for the public and the police to come together thereby enhancing the police-public relation. Later, Mr. Gurung extended his gratitude towards Jorethang Badminton Association and all the other departments such as Power, PHE, PWD, RDD and Health for providing their aid and support for providing all the necessary resources for rendering the success of the event. In addition he also called upon the youth to engage in sporting activities such as badminton which helps them them to utilise their time productively while abstaining from drugs and other anti-social activities. He also highlighted that the Inter Police Badminton Championship invokes a fundamental social message of Saving Water.
The two daylong event that was inaugurated by IGP/ Law & Order Mr. Akshay Sachdeva on 5th December saw a total of over 76 police personnel from various parts of Sikkim participating in the badminton championship. A total of 96 matches were played in the categories of mixed doubles, station heads doubles, men’s singles, veteran doubles, women’s singles, veterans singles, station head singles and men’s doubles. The winners of the match were awarded a cash prize of 2000 each alongside the winner’s trophy, medal and certificate. Similarly, the runners-up were awarded a cash prize of 1000 alongside a runners-up trophy, medal and certificates. The program also saw a friendly match between Minister G.M Gurung and SDM Mr. T. Denzongpa where the former emerged victorious. Later, mementos of the Championship were presented to the guests and senior citizens present.
