Santosh Nirash appointed goodwill ambassador of SSACS
Giving a novel standpoint in reaching the common masses with the message of HIV/AIDS awareness, 81-year-old journalist Santosh Nirash was today appointed as the goodwill ambassador of Sikkim State Aids Control Society.
During her one year tenure, Mrs Nirash will help promote AIDS awareness across the State.
This was today announced by Dr. V Singhi, the new Project Director of SSACS in a media workshop on HIV/AIDS held here at the conference hall of State Forest Department.
Singtam businessman arrest for alleged tax evasion attempt
A hardware businessman in Singtam has been arrested by police after he allegedly tried to evade commercial taxes on a cement supply order.
Sources informed that a joint team of Singtam police and Commercial Tax Division, Gangtok had conducted a raid at the shop of Sunil Agarwal today morning where 250 bags of cement were being unloaded from a truck, SK03-1007.
The team found out that the cement consignment was supposed to be delivered to one TB Subba of Machong, it is informed.

Dams in Sikkim: – Blessing or curse
With reference to your article dated March 3, 10 titled “Precarious Gangtok if earthquake hits” regarding the assessment of NMID is timely. The people in the State are living in a fool’s paradise. It is a disaster waiting to happen.
The disastrous situation is compounded by the fact that all the 30 or more odd dams already constructed, under construction or on the anvil for tendering or negotiations with construction companies are concentrated in an area of 70 kms by 40 kms which is high density of dams per square kilometer.
Also, it is true that dams are required for power generation and would contribute to revenue generation to this revenue starved state. And on the positive side dams are relatively less polluting than thermal and coal power plants. However dams are environmentally damaging and also leave carbon footprints.

9 pvt varsities face charges of violating UGC norms
Nine private universities are facing complaints of violating the regulations of University Grants Commission (UGC), the Lok Sabha was told today.
They are functioning outside their territorial jurisdiction or within the territorial jurisdiction without the approval of UGC, Minister of State for HRD D Purandeswari said in a written reply.
