A total of 187 tourists have been given shelter in the army transit camp and civil area in 17th Mile for the night by the police and army personnel following heavy snowfall in the high altitude areas of Tsomgo-Nathu La area today.
Heavy snowfall had occurred in the above high altitude in the afternoon hours while the tourists were returning back to Gangtok after visiting the tourism spots of Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir and Nathu La area. Hundreds of tourists had gone to these spots today.
A six member State Organic Farming Cell headed by State agriculture minister Dawchoo Lepcha has been constituted by the State Government to promote organic farming in Sikkim and for implementation of organic farming programmes and policies of the State.

A 69 year old American trekker today died due to high altitude sickness while trekking along the high altitude Dzongri trek route in West Sikkim.
District Collector (West) Santa Pradhan told SIKKIM EXPRESS that the deceased was identified was John M Cambell. He had gone trekking to Dzongri along with his daughter and nine other Americans, said Mr. Pradhan.
Cambell’s death has been attributed to ill-health and breathing problems in the high altitude areas along the Dzongri trail. The ten member US group had embarked on the trek along the famed Dzongri route from October 22.
A team of Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation (STDC) led by its Chairman Narendra Kr Subba recently initiated few interstate tourism promotion activities during their recent visit to Karnataka in South India.
This, the STDC in a press release said was initiated keeping with the Congenial Tourism Policy of the State Government and vision of Chief Minister Pawan Chamling to make Sikkim a most attractive tourist destination.
