29 Oct, Gangtok : A tiny Himalayan Indian state Sikkim is known for the maximum numbers of Hydro Electric projects that have one after another taken place since last 10 years. Mushrooming hydro projects of the private firm have devastated not just ecology but also the way of survival for the people and farmers. For the farmers, once abundance water rich Agricultural land has turned dismaying due to seepage of perennial water into tunnels underneath, free flow of fresh water has be disturbed which mainly attributes to glacier disturbances. The rhythm of nature has been disturbed, due to which record landslides are occurring.
The young mountains have been instigated, tunneled in order to manifest the thirst of power developers as well as NHPC like Govt of India enterprises. Haphazard constructions, rampant tunneling works have left scores of uncertainties regarding catastrophes. The state of Sikkim which lies atop sensitive seismic zone is already shook by 18 September 2011 deadliest earthquake as well as recurring tremors again and again.
The tantamount grudge or challenge to built massive Dams with bigger reservoirs in any time of future could lead to unprecedented loss of many lives in case the disturbed tectonic plates due to the rampant construction of tunnels and dams gets excited.
