Rain triggers landslide in Rolep, 7 dead claims local body
7 Jun, Gangtok: After 18 September 2011 once again Sikkim is reeled by a natural calamity. Torrential rain triggered a landslide at Rolep in East Sikkim under Rongli jurisdiction today morning at 5 AM due to which five houses were swept. Four bodies have been recovered from debris; three are still missing said DP Adhikari, Panchayat of Chujachen Gram Unit to Voice of Sikkim. The rescue operation is pressed at war foot state by massive volunteers, police and NGOs since morning to recover any people stashed in the debris. Adhikari told that one child of age around 12-13 years was rescued in very critical state from debris who was referred to Pakyong PHC.
Due to rain road leading to Rolep is badly affected at several places in Lamaten as such vehicular movement is not at all possible in this worst hit situation, he said.
The District Collectorate East , SDM Rongli, SP have reached the place immediately after the incident.
Three bodies are yet to be recovered from debris and the youth, volunteers are working hard to dig out the bodies said Panchayat Adhikari to Voice of Sikkim. According to Adhikari several Gram Panchayats have come foward for immediate rescue operation.
It may be added here that after the shocking incident of 18 September earthquake the state authority seems inactive in natural disaster management console. The activity of the department in awareness is been observed very weak and almost NIL in various public awareness aspects. With such resultant of Natural Calamity hit the state for second time and negligence of Disaster Management preparedness activity is observed lame, says one dissatisfied youth.
