State Contingent Participated in Eastern India Science Fair 2012

1 Feb,Gangtok: Eastern India Science Fair is a regular annual feature organised by BITM and National Council of Science Museums in collaboration with states of Eastern and North Eastern India. The 36th episode of Eastern India Science Fair 2012 was held at Birla Industrial and Technological Museum (BITM), Kolkata w.e.f. 17th Jan 2012 to 21st January 2012. Sikkim along with 10 states of Eastern and North Eastern India participated in the fair. Meghalaya, Jharkhand and Andaman and Nicobar Island couldn’t participate. This year, 154 schools and 13 Science Clubs participated in the fair.76 participants with 29 Engineering Models from 14 Colleges participated in Science and Engineering fair which was also held simultaneously.

Sikkim contingent of 26 members comprising of 21 Students from ten different Secondary and Senior Secondary Schools and 4 Teacher Escorts was lead by Mr Shanti Ram Adhikari, Assistant Director SCERT, and HRD Department. The contingent comprised of the following members:

As usual Sikkim Contingent showed a very good performance and brought glory and fame to the State by excelling in different areas of the fair. The Sikkim contingent won the following Prizes:

State Best Model Award was bagged by “Disaster Friendly Structures in Hills” a model prepared by Suman Subba of Singhik Sec School, North Sikkim. The Award comprised of a merit scholarship in the form of cash of Rs 4000/- to the model maker student, Guide Teacher Award of Rs 2000/- to guide teacher Mr Phuchungla Bhutia and School Award of Rs. 3000/- to the Singhik Sec. School.

  1. Appreciation Awards / Special Prizes in the form of books  and certificates were given to two models:

“Structure of Hope” a model of an Earthquake Indicator prepared by Tshering Yangden Bhutia and Jeanin Moktan of Mangan Sr. Sec. School under the guidance of guide teacher Mr Prakash Rawat.

i)                  “Bio Gas Production from Kitchen waste” a model designed by Avinash Kumar and Anurag Gurung of TNSSS under the guidance of guide teacher Mrs Uma Upadhyay.

3       Work Experience Camps on four different subjects viz. Life Science, Pattern making, Mask Making and Herbal products were conducted. Out of four students who participated in these camps, Rigden Lepcha from Mangan Sr Sec. School won the Special prize in the form of Books.

Sikkim contingent presented a Lepcha Folk dance in the Cultural Exchange Programme which was appreciated by everyone. Therefore in terms of performance at EISF, Sikkim Contingent not only won prizes but also the hearts of the organisers and participants.

In a nutshell, the fair was a very informative and enriching exposure for our students. They learned a lot not only from the models and exhibits prepared by students from other states but also from various innovative programmes like 3D Show, surprising Chemical Reactions, Mock Up Coal Mine, Fascinating Physics, Meet the Scientists and Science Magic and Miracles which were full of scientific knowledge and informations. Students have returned richer and enlightened with the experiences of EISF and are now better motivated to innovate in every field of their lives and also capable of producing loop effects for those coming in contact with these participants.
