Red Fest Campaign to reinvigorate HIV/AIDS awareness campaign : Dr. RK Sharma
24 Nov, Khamdong: With a view of creating responsible youths, bringing behavioural change and demystifying HIV/AIDS as well making aware of the available facilities and educating through entertainment, Sikkim State AIDS Control Society (SSACS) has started a two month long state level intervention program titled Red Fest campaign. The program has been designed with a view to create resource pool for further intervention as well halt and reverse the epidemic in the state and reinvigorate the awareness campaign.
This was informed by Dr. Raj Kumar Sharma, Deputy Director, Sikkim State AIDS Control Society while addressing the technical session on AIDS and the role of students in its prevention. Apart from multimedia and other infotainment activities, a direct intervention in schools and colleges to disseminate awareness of HIV and AIDS through a series of engaging activities are included in the campaign, he informed.
The two months exercise would involve at positively engaging the youth through several competitions, ranging from music, football, positive interventions in schools and colleges and a host of other activities spreading awareness about HIV and AIDS and the ill effects of substance abuse amongst youngsters, he added. Dr. Sharma also urged the students not to hesitate to ask their teachers to get relieved from doubts arising in their mind about this dreaded disease.
Addressing the technical session on Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and Mid Day Meal, Assistant Director, HRDD, Shri CS Subba informed that a that a total of 25 adult education centre with 379 enrolment is functional in Khamdong Block. Those enrolled are aged between 35 to 75 with lower Khamdong showing a huge progress in enrolment. He added that a six month long special course has been introduced in Khamdong Senior Secondary School for school dropouts, who on completion of their course will be readmitted in schools for further education.
