3 day long workshop on “Planning for Mobility for Hill towns in context to Public Transport” begins

2 Nov,Gangtok: The three days long workshop on “Planning for Mobility for Hill towns in context to Public Transport” started here in the capital today. The workshop is being organized by the Institute of Urban Transport (IUT), Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India under UNDP-GEF Supported Sustainable Urban Transport Project with the support of the Transport Department, Sikkim Nationalize Transport (SNT) Division, Government of Sikkim. The objective of the workshop was to sensitize the concern authorities about the public transport in the urban areas and its problems and solutions. Various resource persons from all over the country presented their research papers on the subject through PowerPoint presentation.
Speaking from the chair Mr. L.M.Pradhan, Principal Chief Engineer, Transport Department, Government of Sikkim, who was the Chief Guest of the programme presented a brief historical background of SNT. He also informed about the road connectivity which is an only mode of transportation in the state. Mr. Pradhan said that this workshop would be helpful and fruitful to plan the urban transportation and mobility in the state. He delivered his good wishes to the organizing team and the participants for fruitful outputs of the workshop.
Addressing the participants Mr. B.I Singal, Director General IUT, said that motive behind such workshop is to bring improvement of transportation in the urban clusters and planning of new methodologies for further improvement in the public transport system.
The workshop also witnesses the group discussion and analysis on the issues like innovation public transport solution, mobility for hill towns, urban transport and its role in city life and hill towns, parking and non-motorized transportation in hill towns, technology and mass transit options, mobility and road safety, legislative framework and urban transport, institutional framework, financial arrangements etc.
The workshop was also attended by the Officers and Engineers of Transport Department, Local Architects and Member from NGOs.
