02 Oct,Gangtok: The 142nd Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated here at Chintan Bhawan, today. The programme started at Mahatma Gandhi Marg, Gangtok where His Excellency the Governor of Sikkim and the Chief Minister of Sikkim offered Khadas and garlands to the bust of Mahatma Gandhi.
His Excellency the Governor of Sikkim in his address terming Mahatma Gandhi as apostle for peace and non violence urged everyone to learn from the life and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi. Talking about the recent earthquake His Excellency complimented the Indian Army, Civil Administration, political leadership and police force in the manner in which they have acted at this hour of crisis. He further added that Sikkimis a model for the post earthquake rehabilitation. But at the same time he cautioned that there are many lessons to be learned from this earthquake.
Address the gathering at Chintan Bhawan, Gangtok the Chief Minister said that the United Nations Organisations has declared 2nd October, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi as Non Voilence Day on 15th June 2007. Talking about the recent earthquake which hit the state the Chief Minister said that the earthquake has become great hindrance in the pace of the development of the state. He further said that in this hour of crisis the people of Sikkim should learn from the works of Mahatma Gandhi and work unitedly for rebuilding and redevelopment of the state. The Chief Minister further declared that the Minister’s and the Members of Legislative Assembly of the state will donate salary for the month of October 2011 in Chief Ministers Relief Fund for the earthquake victims and further added that donations in the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund is purely voluntary and there is no any compulsion for anyone to donate for the relief fund. Concluding his address the Chief Minister urged everyone to pledge to make Sikkim peaceful, secure and most beautiful and best state in the country.
