Govt gives a nod for three more hydel power project

28 Mar, Gangtok: Giving continuity to its efforts to harness Sikkim’s hydro electric potential, the state government has decided to tie up with three private developers for establishing mega power projects in the state. The decision to tie up with the three private developers was taken in the recent meeting of cabinets held in the capital. As per the cabinet’s decision, the state government would be signing separate draft agreements with the companies developing the proposed 22MW Recchu power project, 27.5 MW hydro power project and 54 MW Kalej Stage II hydro powerproject.

GOVT. GIVES GO AHEAD PERMISSION TO HYDEL PROJECT AND ON THE OTHER SIDE WANT TO DUST OUR EYES AS FAR AS PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES ARE CONCERN .IT IS TOTALLY DOUBLE STANDARD AND WE PEOPLE NEED TO BE SERIOUS AND IS THE PEAK HOUR TO DO SO.
SHAME ON US AND TO OUR GOVT.

Wat I feel is that u should not blame d govt. coz they r doing da right thing as far as posible. Perhaps U don't hav idea that there will be no central Govt. to assist for Developmental works in Sikkim. So, the project which are on going keep them as they are………..!Sikkim needs revenue to run d whole state which will come form those projects in future…….! So, in my opinion keeping d project is d only way to generate d revenue in Sikkim………!!!

I’ll come straight to the point; we need mega power projects to fortify our state's revenue.

Development can we had without having to restrain the life system of Earth, her veins and arteries. Development without growth, that's what we can as humans strive for, and attain.

It is sheer idiocy to go against the developmental process of the state govt and there is not a grain of truth in those rumours that hydro power project can effect the environment , it was just an idle threat to ecosystem. so it might be more prudent to get a second opinion before making any irresponsible comments regarding to projects. it caused quite a stir….

  5. My View

I don't think more hydel projects be encouraged when there are many other options available to develop Sikkim. We have faced enough consequences even with the one with ¨530MW-Teesta hydel project. For those, who have not witnessed any effect on environment, may go and live in those places atleast for few days…and say how you would feel to see the NHPC complex glittering in light from a dark villages located nearby…The place which was exploited for the same hydel project doesn't still reliable power supply….so, what is the use of exploiting our limited resources for power generation? We have mere land holdings in Sikkim, that too are being taken by the companies, where do you think the local people or say the next generation be living in future Sikkim, if this trend continues? Ofcourse, there is huge money flow in Sikkim due to these companies but this may be only for short term… can people chew money when they have no resources left with them? We shouldn't forget that Sikkim is the second smallest state (7,096 sq.km, which account for only 0.22% area of India) and In my opinion, we donot have excess land area and even the water resources left to be donated to hydel projects…anymore!!

I agree that there are many options available to develop Sikkim. But this does not mean we should stop the power project or should not utilize our natural resources. Today, the world depends on electricity for everything, from accomplishing daily household tasks, to electronic gadgets, workshops and factories; even transportation to communications, in this direction hydro power project can assist very largely.
Yea there were some impacts involved in initially constructing the 530MW-Teesta project. However, the construction of a dam and power plant, along with the impounding of a reservoir, creates certain social and physical changes, but these are manageable through measures for mitigating and compensating the damages.
And about NHPC complex glittering in light and dark villages etc…etc… Effective mitigation measures can be implemented if locals and project promoters acknowledge and address these problems. However during the operational stage, the hydro project may represent a significant source of revenues for local communities. The access roads, local availability of electricity and other activities associated with the reservoir are all possible sources of sustainable economic and social development.
I know Sikkim is the second smallest state, but for your kind info most of projects are plants on river bank not in villages. And it should be kept in mind that hydro power project is the developments are long-term investments that can benefit various generations.
The message of HCM; he urged the young providers to come forward to support the initiatives to make Sikkim a model state and take full advantage of the opportunities provided by his government. And I think it is time for opposing factions and work towards for betterments of our state.

i guess its more than sufficient now…we don't need hydel projects now..there r other areas also which needs immidiate attention….already damage has been done by constructing several hydel projects…if now govt..wants to built more..than its nothing but they want to fill their pockets…i said it..though its sad but…..that's how system works….

we demand for more hydel projects to transform Teesta into stream, so that it could be more easier for us to fish for survival,every1 things for their own living(pockets),what about us???. the torrent of Teests has swept many life's of our fellowmen(fisherman)which made our life living on the edge and has shattered our life at some points…their is none to rescue…so this proverb is appropriate"when elephants fights grass(we) is that suffers"!!!!
some says its development and some says its is destruction…whatever it is i give a shit because nobody understands us..aren't we the bonifide citizen???
