28 Feb, Yuksam: Two Australian delegates Sally Padey, Owner& Director, Mogo Zoo, Australia and Hannelie Van Der Merwe, Head Keeper was on their two days visit in different place of Yuksam form 26th February 2011. The delegates visited Kanchandzonga National Park (KNP) and other places and interacted with the officials of KNC, members of Kanchandzonga Conservation Committee (KCC) and Research Scholar from Wildlife Institute of India (WII) in different topics for the conservation and the protection of the kanchendzonga Nation Park and other related topics. During their visit they were accompanied by Urmila Thapa, Dircetor, Himalayan Zoological Park, Bubulay, East Sikkim, DFO, Kanchandzonga National Park (KNP) Tshering Pintso Bhutia and the members of Kanchandzonga Conservation Committee (KCC).
The Australian delegates were greeted with a warm welcome by the DFO, KNP (West), Tshering Pintso Bhutia and the Members of Kanchandzonga Conservation Committee (KCC) an NGO based at Yuksam.
During the interaction session DFO (KNP) Tshering Pintso briefed them about Kanchandzonga National Park (KNP), its activities and the working system adopted by the department and NGOs. In the evening a interaction was also organized in between the delegates and the members of KCC along with a research scholar from Wildlife Institute of India (WII) by the DFO KNP. The interaction was then followed by power presentation made by the Members of KCC on the Zero Waste Project which was launched at Yuksam and on the Baseline information on Distribution of Carnivores, Ungulates and Galliformes in the western part of Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve, Sikkim by Mr. Tapajit Bhattacharya.
Hannelie Van der Merwe, Head keeper of the MOGO Zoo in Australia said that the presentation was only the very tip of the Iceberg. She further added that “It is not often that one has the pleasure of being in the company of such inspirational sincere and accomplished people – all working for this great cause of Conservation. She further added that as fellow caretakers of nature they have an understanding of the efforts needed to sustain what is left of our beautiful earth. However, having a terrain and diversity as challenging as here in Yuksam, in fact whole of Sikkim, makes what we do in Australia seem like “a walk in the Park”
They also appreciated the work carried by them and said that we applaud your efforts and tenacity and wish this group of people great success in every effort. What they have done this year and what they aspire to is a proof that education is the most integral part of conservation.
Sally Padey further adds that their visit to Yukasm was the most humbling and heartwarming experience. At the end they pledged with their support towards this most worthy cause of conservation in whatever possible way.
