Candle light vigil in support of 17th Karmapa held in Gangtok
GANGTOK, 31 Jan: A meeting of the Karmapa Reception Committee [KRC], a united body of Sikkim monks lobbying to bring the XVIIth Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje to Sikkim, and the Joint Action Committee [formed for the same purpose] have strongly condemned news-reports [proliferating the Indian mainstream media] portraying Ogyen Trinley Dorje as a Chinese agent.

The meeting, held here on Monday afternoon, was attended by the members of both, the KRC and the JAC, along with a host of devotees and monks. Following long discussions on various issues which are being thrown up in the wake of raids at Gyuto Monastery at Sidhbari near Dharamsala [where the Karmapa has been hosted for the past decade], the group resolved to strongly condemn such speculative reportage and have decided to strong measures to register their condemnation.
As a first measure, the meeting decided to participate in a candlelight vigil to be held at the Titanic Park in Gangtok on Monday evening. This vigil began as an impromptu gesture of support for the Karmapa following growing chatter on the social media and is now growing larger.
The meeting has also resolved to begin a relay hunger strike from Tuesday at the Titanic Park [provided permission is granted for the venue, failing which an alternate site will be picked], to register the sentiments.
Meanwhile, a mass meeting was also announced for 05 February at the Old Guards Ground at Tathangchen to discuss the situation and seek public endorsement for the condemnation of “offensively speculative” reporting which is hounding the Karmapa at present.
Speakers at the meeting also reiterated that as far as the ‘confusion’ over who the ‘genuine’ Karmapa reincarnation was, that chapter is closed “because as far as a majority of the people are concerned, Ogyen Trinley Dorjee is the XVIIth Karmapa”.
Today’s meeting appointed Thukchuk Lachungpa and KT Bhutia as the Spokespersons to speak with the media on the upcoming agendas and programmes of the group.

The dispute over who the genuine Karmapa incarnation is hardly "closed" – what a disingenuous comment, but typical from the aggressive Joint Action Committee and their supporters which have been responsible for so much thuggery, bullying and violence in support of Urgyen Trinley since the early 1990s.
Perhaps Lama Ole should have kept the ‘real’ 17th Karmapa the secret the High Lamas intended it to be (in order to both protect the Dharma and outwit the Chinese) is my latest (highly controversial) theory

lama ole is asshole. He knows nothing about spiritual practice except sleeping with many different women. He is just an ass hole. He talks nice which is like every politicians in India do. So no surprising. Karmapa Urgen Trinley Dorjee is genuine Karmapa, recognized by H H Dalai lama and entire tibetan also beleive him only as real karmapa. He is always in the heart of Tibetan people.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Chinese government set Karmapa up by infiltrating his close circle, disguised as wealthy Chinese lay devotees with bundles of yuan, which they knew would be difficult for him to explain. I can imagine the other large sums of currencies, as I saw large bills thrown on offering tables like play money during the annual Monlam in Bodh Gaya.
Cash worth around £500,000 is found in the Buddhist monastery in Himachal Pradesh where Karmapa lives. For many this might tantamount to Karmapa being “a Chinese agent”. But if you do some elementary mathematics, the figure looks much more benevolent and modest. It’s simply, 100 x 5000. In other words, its equivalent to 5000 people donating 100 pounds (around Rs. 7000) each or 10000 people donating 50 pounds (Rs. 3500) each and so on and so forth. And given the number of devotees Karmapa has in Indian and abroad anyone with a sane state of mind should be able to estimate the sum total of cash his monastery will maintain at a given time. Moreover, every Tibetan is a natural donor; for them charity is synonymous with the good karma. Irrespective of their social standing donation for religious causes are commonplace and to comprehend this, all one needs to do is observe Tibetan culture and their close-knit commune with curious mind and open heart. I think it’s reckless of us to accuse the head of the monastery (and the saint who is revered by millions) of being a Chinese spy just because he has money unless, of course, if there are other unambiguous evidences to prove his alleged links. Otherwise, we should apologise to the monk and his followers for deeply hurting their religious sentiment all for the gains of TRP greedy media.
However, if found loopholes he might be summoned on other tax related grounds that regulate the inflow of foreign aide to India. But the ‘Chinese spy’ theory I believe is totally out of place and derogatory.
I wish the Press was equally logical.This is character assassination at its worst.

Karmapa Lama, Dalai Lama's one possible successors has been residing in India since 2000 and now suddenly something very unpredictable incident took place in his spiritual life which led to an incredible depressive and bowl over moments for all the people who worship him as a Living Buddha. Those who are at the rear of this hideous strategy will be punished in this life or in hell and that's inevitable. For me, I'm too certain that there has been headlong steps taken by the concerned officials. They should take their steps wisely. Another theory is that the two Karmapas should get together – I believe the 16th Karmapa, by all accounts in this shabby and distracting tale, is more than capable of undertaking some kind of hitherto undisclosed post-death practice by which both of these Buddhist practitioners are visited with searing insight – that’s an aspiration shared, I imagine, with many ‘mellon-headed’ Westerners – including artists like myself – artist-dramatist to be precise – wishing faithfully to make perfect ‘use’ of these teachings yet unable (by nature of being a dramatist) to cease to search amidst the ruins of what it is that makes us, potentially, divinely human. Judge me by my work not by my periodic statements in various disguises (some based on reality-models, historical personages. spirit-kings, rollingminders – you get the picture). I do not do autobiography – nor have I ever – yet in these Tibetan master-teachings there is something of home, whatever I think that means. Whatever ‘I’ means. Laugh out loud!
