Decentralisation within the SDF likely
Gangtok, December 19: Sikkim Chief Minister and ruling Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) president Pawan Kumar Chamling meeting former legislators during a ceremonial dinner last night is seen as having attracted attention both within and outside the SDF ranks. A former MLA representing his colleagues informed this publication that Chamling hinted a new concept of decentralization of the party during the gathering. It is also informed that Chamling also had confidentials meeting with former legislators to this effect. He further informed that unlike his grace during the early year of the SDF in power, Chamling dealt on decentralizing the party and separating politics and governance. The concept of separating the SDF from governance was earlier advised by its senior members way back in 1994, but Chamling had disregarded the theory, informed one former MLA. A senior leader was even proposed for the party president’s post then but Chamling had denied the idea, it is informed. Expressing surprise on Chamling having thought on ‘party decentralization theory’ another former legislator said that the matter is been meticulously observed both within and outside the party. It is also informed that Chamling even suggested former legislators that if anything goes wrong within the party then all would suffer and be reduced. Recalling Sikkim ’s political past, the party man further added that no party worker ha d suffered in any case despite Chamling’s suggestion. It is also informed that Chamling has assured special packages for former legislators and in turn the MLAs were seen animated on hearing this.
Commenting on a brewing dissidence within the SDF, Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee (SPCC) President and former Chief Minister Nar Bahadur Bhandari said that his party has been keeping a tab on all political developments within the ruling front. He further said that the UPA government at the centre is aware of the turbulence within the SDF. According to Bhandari, people are raising their own voice for a change following discontentment in Chamling’s governance. On a fuming MLA PS Tamang, Bhandari said that the UPA is keeping a close watch on Tamang’s every move. He further reiterated to come forward to support the clarion call for a change in Sikkim . Bhandari further informed that the Congress led UPA government at the centre would support Tamang and the Sikkimese people at large in their pursuit for change.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed sources within the party informed that though Chamling had tactically rescheduled Janta Mela for December 21 to coincide with PS Tamang’s picnic at Rolu Manpur in South Sikkim on the same day, the Mela would be impossible as all government officials are on leave due to the ongoing festive holidays in the state.
Some political pundits have even held that following this occurrence, Chamling could even resort to go door-to-door to uphold his bastion.
When asked on Chamling’s move, another dissident leader and former MLA Bhojraj Rai opined that Chamling would never succeed to nullify the waves of change across the state. “As people have come to the fields, how long can he thwart their voices” he said.
Decentralization ,if it happens will change the way sikkim is being run so far…it will kill the idea of dictatorship….this sounds like change for the good .rather than new dictators being born now n then…..hats off to sdf for coming up with this idea,
Decentralisation is all a sham. The past 20 years has witnessed SDF as only a one man party. Its a good ides about “separating politics and governance” but i doubt if that can happen.
First of all the party is hand in glove with the contractor and other lobbies making sure the party fund payment comes in first. This is one of the major impediments to growth and quality work on development.
Besides, even people with good ides dont have their way because only one man thinks what is right for Sikkim and the way he thinks is right could be a very bad for Sikkim. Look at the electronic media i.e Nayuma. It never shows the real news. It is just party propaganda. There is no freedom of speech at all. Ok a little in the print media but not so in the other forms.
All in all, no matter what, Sikkim is a part of India which is the world largest democracy. So Chamling will have to bow out of power someday. Not that he’s getting any younger. He’s getting old and ideas are old and he looks like he’s a tired old man. The problem in Sikkim is that when politicians are in power, they never think of their life after they are out of power and i guess Chamling too will have his share of CBI corruption cases running after him til he dies.
Sadly, i hope someone who is of a better intellectual caliber than that of P S golay can run Sikkim. Golay is nothing more than an old wine in a new bottle. Sure, he’s popular but i dont think, he can run Sikkim better than Chamling. Infact i think matured well as a leader but i dont think P S Golay has that in him. Its high time corruption is dealt with some Gandhigiri and good economics otherwise Sikkim’s future in such leaders will be sad.
mere tactics to save the government…nothing meant for the sikkimese..
still the message from the politicians is-
” SELF-INTEREST SUPREME”
Good thought Tenzing. Agree with your idea re Golay.Chams has to go and Golay too.
SO THE MESSAGE IS..CONGRESS SHOULD FORM THE GOVERNMENT HEHEHEHE
If congress forms a government then the condition of sikkim will be worse than darj cause the people in the plains wont give a dam. All they are after is MPs. So Rahul and sonia dont know sikkim and dont really care.
