34 local students procuring scholarship courses at Manipal, SMIMS Dean appointed as Vice President
of National Board of Examinations

Gangtok, November 30: Eighty three students mostly belonging to the BPL families sponsored by the state government have been given admission to BSc Nursing and allied health courses at Manipal institute under capacity building scheme of the state Government. Eighty three of these have already been sent to Manipal and are undergoing the course. The institution has provided 50 percent scholarship to the students and the remaining 50 percent is borne by the state government, told Dr SS Pabla, Vice Chancellor of Sikkim Manipal University (SMU), addressing a press conference.
Besides, a three months training program that commenced from September 14 would continue till December 11 for the 25 newly recruited officers of Sikkim Civil Services is also being conducted at SMIT under the auspices of SMU and State Knowledge Commission. The state government has selected very bright offices for their administration, Dr Pabla said.
Highlighting on other major events took place this year he told that SMIMS Dean Dr RN Salhan has been appointed as Vice President (Basic Medical Sciences) of National Board of Examinations by Ministry Welfare, Government of India. Dr Salhan will be attending the first meeting of the newly constituted board on November 27 at Delhi where the board will approve pending applications of medical colleges for admitting students for DNB.
Another accolade to the SMU is that N Das Jethwani of Siliguri who is associated with Innovation and Incubation Centre (IIC) at Electronics Development Centre in SMIT has received a National Award for ‘Innovation’ from the President of India Pratibha Devi Singh Patil on November 12 during the 5th National Biennial Awards function of National Innovation Foundation at New Delhi. Das has been awarded for development of an energy efficient tube light ‘Ajooba’ which helps in upto 50% savings in energy consumption and an automatic fan controller for energy efficiency.
IIC at SMIT has helped the innovator in technical documentation, assessment of its technical feasibility and development of commercially viable product. It has also extended venture support and protection of intellectual property rights of the innovator with the help of NIF. Rs 3.83 lakhs from NIF’s micro-venture investment funds has been received to commercialize the product. The production has been started at innovator’s end.
Further, the technology has been licensed to three entrepreneurs to market the product in different states of the country. The IIC is also in the process of technology transfer to the potential entrepreneurs in other states, Dr Pabla told.
Dr Pabla also informed that Prof. Ian Jarvis from Leicester University in UK visited SMIT on November 18 in connection with the MoU signed between the SMU and Leicester University on September 4 this year in order to promote mutually beneficial cooperation between the two institutions in Academic Cooperation, Exchange of staff and students and Exchange of information, academic materials and productions.
Similarly, Moulik Berkana, Deputy Director of the Consulate General of USA, from Kolkata visited SMU on November 10 to interact with the students and the faculty on Indo-US relations.
