State BJP leader accuses Dept of flouting RTI Act norms

GANGTOK, November 24: State BJP Unit vice president Padam Bahadur Chettri has today accused the State Building and Housing Department of violating the provisions of the Right to Information Act by appointing multiple State Public Information Officers and Assistant State Public Information Officers for various sections and divisions.

Mr. Chettri has lodged a complaint with the Chief Information Commission at the State Information Commission requesting him for appropriate action against those responsible for this alleged violation of the RTI Act.
In his complaint, copies of which were released to the news persons in Gangtok today, Mr Chettri has stressed that the Act provides for only one State Public Information Officer instead of multiple ones and the applicant is required to approach only one State Public Information Officer. The State BJP leader has also requested the CIC to act within five working days against the erring officials of the department.

Talking to media persons, the State BJP vice president said that he had dully applied for seeking some information from the Building and Housing Department on 12th of this month. In its reply, the department requested him to contact designated SPIOs and ASPIOs for various sections, enclosing the concerned officer order of the department mentioning the names of 18 such persons along with their area of assignment. Mr Chettri accused the department of deliberately trying to keep those seeking information under the RTI by complicating the issue and appointing a number of SPIOs and ASPIOs.
