Sikkim begins work on new education system
GANGTOK, November 20: After the path breaking move in abolishing Class X examination from 2011 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, the groundwork to initiate the new educational mechanism in the Secondary and Senior Secondary Schools in Sikkim has begun.
The Chairman of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Vineet Joshi along with his team comprising of RP Sharma, coordinator to the chairman and Papaya Mukharjee, resource person, who are here in the State imparted training to the Principals and officials of various schools affiliated to CBSE on the new education system introduced by the board from this year.
It has also been learnt that the circular of CBSE new reformation in education system are distributed to all the heads of the schools. The training programme for East District was conducted on November 18 where representatives from 30 schools took part along with the Principal and two teachers, one each from Arts and Science Streams.
Speaking to SIKKIM EXPRESS, HRDD Director CS Rao said, during the training the officials of CBSE discussed about the continuous comprehensive evaluation proposed by CBSE in place of present class X board exam. The students from present ninth standard would come under the purview of new regulations of grading system, he said.
The director further said that question papers for Class IX have already come and exams would start from November 25.
He explained that the new method of grading would be classified in two parts – formative evaluation system and summative evaluation system. Under the formative system, the students will be tested upon their curricular activities while the latter would include written examination and will be graded as per the CBSE guidelines. Mr. Rao added that the students have to secure the minimum grade D to get promoted.
“Two chances will be given to the students who do not qualify the grade in the same session,” the director said. He further said that the practical examination would be conducted as per the earlier syllabus.
Interestingly, after passing this education system, students passing out the tenth standard need to sit for aptitude test for various streams to undergo higher education.
Except for the setting of question papers, the entire evaluation will be carried out by the school itself.
According to the database of HRDD, 7,862 students of standard ninth from 151 secondary and nine private schools will be experiencing the new method of evaluation.
In the meantime, the Chairman and the team also met with the HRDD Minister NK Pradhan on November 19 to discuss the method in a more elaborate way.
