District Level Role Play Competition for North District held at Mangan Sr. Sec. School: A Report

State Institute of Education, HRD Department, in collaboration with National Population Education Project (NPEP), National Council of Educational Research and Training, New Delhi organised District Level Role Play Competition in North District on 18th of Nov 2009 at Mangan Sr Sec School.

Role Play is an activity presenting a small spontaneous play which describes possible real life situations where participants imitate someone else’s characters involved. Role Play allows students to enact situations before they meet such situations in real life. It also provides them with an opportunity to have experiences in the application of life skills that are important to protect them from risky situations. As an educational activity it gives opportunities to students for learning by experience.It is different from one act play, as role play is conducted without any script, without any costumes and participants are only 4-5 in numbers.

The prime objectives of organizing the competition were:

i) Interactive participation of students providing them opportunities for experiential learning.
ii) Validating the strategies of the role play for development of ability to apply life skills in real life situations.
iii) To create enabling environment for effective transactions of Adolescence Education in Schools.

The following themes were considered for the Role Play Competition:

Healthy relationships among adolescents
Charms and challenges of Adolescence
HIV/AIDS: “Stigmatization”
Cause and impact of Drug Abuse.

Students performed on various themes as mentioned above.As per the guidelines provided by NPEP, NCERT students were allowed to speak either in English or Hindi for dialogue delivery and the time limit was 7 minutes.
Their performance was judged as per the following criteria:
i)  Coverage of theme and situations: 30%
ii) Presentation of Role Play: 30%
iii) Reflection of Life skills during Role Play: 40%
Total 100%

To evaluate the performance of the students there were three judges Viz:
Mrs Sabita Subba, Deputy Director SIE, HRDD
MR D.K.Rai, Resource Person English SIE, HRDD and
Mrs Surekha Sharma, Coordinator SIE, HRDD.
Ms Malati Rai, Asst. Director SIE was the time Judge.

Out of 12 Sec and 3 Sr.Sec Schools of North District only 13 schools participated in the competition and Phensong Sec School and Lachen Sec School did not participate.The programme started with a welcome speech by Asst.Director HRDD North District Mr S.T.lepcha who was the sole representative from HRDD Office North District .Welcome speech  was  followed by a speech by Assistant Director SIE,HRDD,cum Project Officer, Population Education Project Sikkim Mr S.R.Adhikari wherein  he highlighted the WHY and HOW of organizing such competitions.After the performance by  students Mr Adhikari and all the judges gave their feedbacks and suggestions for further improvement of their performance.The programme ended with a vote of thanks proposed by AD HRDD North District Mr Lepcha who also gave away the prizes in the form of cash of

Rs.1500/- to Hee Gyathang SrSec.School   (Ist Position)
Rs. 1000/- to Pasingdong  Sec.School         (IInd Position) and
Rs.  750/- to Singhik Sec.School                (IIIrd Position)

The programme was conducted by Mr S.R.Adhikari and co-ordinated by S.T.Lepcha.
The winning teams will now represent the North District at State level Role Play Competition to be held on 4th December 2009.The winner of state level competitions will inturn represent the state at Regional Role Play Competition to be held in Bhuwaneshwar in third week of December 2009.
