Will Sikkim-Darjeeling merger issue prevent Golay?
Gangtok, November 18 : Even as the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) has disagreed of dissidence within the party, the silence of its disgruntled MLA, PS Tamang is seen as having made him more popular within the ruling front. This comes at a time when the SDF has embarked on a major re-organisation drive, following which Tamang has been sidelined from the core affairs of the SDF.
According to highly placed sources, the SDF has sought the Sikkim-Darjeeling merger issue to do away with a fuming Tamang, whose popularity for his absence has been taken seriously by the ruling front. The merger issue comes at a time when the centre has regulated Sikkim’s share on central grants, considered to be the end-result of a lukewarm relation with the UPA at the centre.
Meanwhile, a latest comment on the issue by an advisor to the SDF that held the merger issue to be the brainchild of the party leadership has started gaining popularity among the common people in the state. Another leader of an opposition party has opined that Sikkim-Darjeeling merger issue would be a viable concern to disrupt Centre-state relations.
It is also learnt that some opposition parties have started lobbying and seeking suggestion and advice from the intellectuals on the merger issue. The parties are said to have resolved to go ahead with the issue deemed to be at the larger interests of the Lepchas, Bhutias and Nepali populace of Sikkim. DK Bomzon, the chief proponent of the merger issue had even camped in Gangtok early last month to work out joint strategies with various opposition parties in the state, it is informed.
Interestingly, an opposition party which was earlier opposed to the merger issue is set to lend its support for the cause. In this regard, it would soon embark on a massive re-organisation and membership drive to revive the merger issue. On condition of anonymity, a party member articulated that they even had a meeting with ‘envoys’ from the ruling front on the Sikkim-Darjeeling merger concern.
Political observers say that if the dissidence within the SDF continues and the disgruntled Tamang revolts, then the SDF holding fort since 1994 would be split into two factions. In an attempt to forestall this situation, the party’s recent re-organisation and mass membership drive is seen as its latest strategy.
The Opposition party geared up to raise the merger issue is said of being assured a whooping amount of Rs.10 crores by some concrete sources to carry out the task.
When contacted on the issue, the union home ministry though did not deny but said that they were unaware of this development.

Merging of Sikkim-Darjeeling does not sound a very appealing desicion.
When people of Darjeeling has been asking for Gorkhaland, which nowhere includes Sikkim, why is it that now Sikkim is coming into the picture. How did such type of thing come up??? I do not think the people of Sikkim are yet aware that the plan of merging “Sikkim and Darjeeling” has cropped up.
Being a Sikkmay I strongly oppose this type of decision/proposals.Isn’t it the public whose consent should be considered before making such decisions.Just because politicians want to cover up their political issues they cant come up with such a decision.Merging of the two should not be a substitute for solving one’s own political issues.I respect and support the forming of Gorkhaland but will never back up the decision of merging the two places. This has now become a matter of great concern for the people of Sikkim. We the people of Sikkim will not keep our silience if this desicion is rolled out.We hope the bureaucrats will think twice before accepting such type of proposals keeping in mind the Voice Of Sikkim.

hahaha..i just cant make out what Golay’s uprise has got to do with the merger…
as far as i knw..no people would accept this at all hahaha..funny..
In your dreams man…..
will not allow it and if that happens the whole scenario will change for the worse and who do you think will be the CM then?? mr. bimal gurung …………
can’t even imagine that…….and what will the new state be called, gorkhaland ??
absurd cause besides the gorkhas they are also other people out here……
yeaa Tashi bro dats right??? cant tolerate and stand the name Gorkhaland at ol bro..
If you cannot tolerate , than its sad …but you have to live by it . Gorkhaland is going to happen….
hey tats really absurd k,merging darj with sikkim will not only create trouble but there will be a large scale unemployement, violence, hatered and hunger for power and lots more within this community which are living peacefully till now.its nothing but GREED of some unrealistic people who dreams to get into power by fooling peoples of both sides.WE MUST UNDERSTAND THOSE PEOPLES TRICKS AND HIT THEM HARD SO TAT THEY NEVER TRY TO KEEP IN STAKE THE FUTURE OF MANY PEOPLES WHOM THEY THINK ARE FOOLISH AND CAN BE MOULDED IN ANY SHAPES TO MAKE MONEY FOR THEM.THESE PEOPLES RATHER OF SOLVING PROBLEMS,ARE CREATING MORE AND MORE.THEIR FACE SHOULD BE PAINTED BLACK AND MAKE TO ROAM BOTH SIKKIM AND DARJ. WE SUPPORT GORKHA LAND CAUSE BUT WE WILL NEVER EVER SUPPORT MERGING SIKKIM IN IT.SIKKIM IS AN INDIAN STATE AND IT WILL BE FOREVER.AND SO LIKE GORKHALAND INDEPENDENTLY
history tells us a different story that lepchas are the aboriginal people of the greater sikkim and were here much before the gorkhas so does that mean we change the name of sikkim to mayallyang and have a lepcha cm……sadly that’s not the case.
m not against the demand for gorkhaland on the development front as the issues are genuine but the leaders should give a serious thought about the name given to the movement as besides the gorkhas we have other lot of people too………
the movement should involve all the sections of the people and not only the gorkhas….
Golay is a toy gun, which looks real when it is held in a distance. Sikkim-Darjeeling merger issue is a hawa mithai that some one are trying to relish.
thats rite Tashi bro….the name itself doesnt take into account the interest of other people in the region..and that is simply going to demean the true people of the region -the LEPCHAS..RUMKUP..RONGKUP…
NOT Lapche..as some of the uncivilised, inarticulate people try to say it…
everyone’s interest much be taken into account
AACHULAY
HEY YOU GUYS I HAVE GREAT RESPECT FOR YOUR COMMUNITY,AS WELL FOR OTHERS TOO.BUT IF YOU WILL TURN BACK TO PAST THAN MANY THINGS WILL COME UP,AS CHINA CLAIMED SIKKIM TO BE PART OF ITS TERRITORY AND IF SO THAN NOT ONLY LEPCHA COMMUNITY ALL OTHERS WOULD BE STANDING NOWHERE.SO, ITS BETTER TO THINK AS A WHOLE SIKKIM.NOT LEPCHAS SIKKIM,AS EVERY BODY IS CONTRIBUTING FOR ITS DEVELOPMENT AND WILL BE DOING SO.LET ME REMIND YOU THAT WAS THE UNCIVILISED PART OF HISTORY,NOW WE ARE MORE ADVANCED AND WITH MORE SENCE OF HUMOUR,SO GUYS LIVE IN PRESENT AND THINK POSITIVE WILL CAN MAKE US PROSPER INSTEAD OF THIS BULLSHIT.
@ Bikash Rai :- brother we respect the formation of Gorkhaland …. but not at the cost of Sikkim… No way in hell its gonna happen …
“MERGER” …???? i’ll rather change its meaning in the dictionary.
hey are you serious……..
for your kind information sikkim does not share any boundary with china so it’s just absurd that china claims sikkim to be a part of china.shares a boundary with tibet and has been ruled by kings since the 16 century…..
History also says that Darjeeling districts was part of Sikkim and was forcefully taken by Sikkim, making the than Chogyal compel to sign the deed of grant. The inhabitants of Sikkim is still a debatable question. Lepchas do have the upper hand in confirming its origin but the candidature of Kirat and Mangar can also be not taken lightly, if Greater Sikkim is concern.

TO WHOMSOEVER IT IS CONCERNED:
HERE THE QUESTION IS NOT ABT SIKKIM BEING BULLIED BY CHINA..ANYONE WHO SEES CHINA AS A THREAT -INTERMS OF WARFARE , IS A MERE FOOLISHNESS…BOTH INDIA AND CHINA ARE BUSY MAINTAINING THEIR GDP , NO LEADERSHIP BOTH IN INDIA AND CHINA WOULD EVER THINK OF GOING BACK 200 YEARS..AFTER THE WAR…
TALKING ABOUT SIKKIM AND THE VARIOUS COMMUNITIES ..LET ME MAKE IT CLEAR TO SOME ASSES HEA…WE ARENT DIFFERENTIATING ANYONE HERE OKEI..
GORKHALAND IS AN ISSUE WHERE THE IDENTITY OF OTHER COMMUNITIES ARE AT STAKE..THATS WHY ME N MY BRETHREN HEA- ANUM TASHI, RAISED THE ALARM..
WE ARENT TALKIN ABT SIKKIM…….
NEXT TIME TRY TO BE MORE PRECISE….AND YA LEME PUT IT THIS WAY..SIKKIM HAS A HISTORY WITH LEPCHAS, BHUTIAS AND LIMBOOS PLAYING A PROMINENT ROLE..AS FAR AS OTHERS ARE CONCERNED ..WE NEED TO HO ACROSS THE BOUNDARY TO PRESENT DAY NEPAL..HENCE , WE ARE RATHER WORRIED …
I agree with Vicky….we the people of Sikkim do not have any problem with the Gorkhaland issue and we would be happy if it is done but that should not affect Sikkim as a whole.
