Training programme on GIS begins at SMIT

Rangpo: Two week long training on Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System began at Sikkim Manipal Institute of Science and Technology (SMIT) on November 17. Computer Science and Technology Department of SMIT has organized the programme sponsored by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). Chief Guest Dr. A Jayaram, Chief Scientist of ISRO, Kharagpur, lighted the inaugural lamp. Science and Technology Department Secretary Mr. A. Aravatia, guest of honour, and Director SMU, Dr. MV Subba Rao were present in the inaugural session.

Dr. Jayaram spoke on the importance of science and technology in modern days. Science and Technology plays a vital role in development of a country, he said. Participants from Assam, Orissa, West Bengal along with students from North Eastern states and more than 50 participants from Sikkim are attending this two week long programme.

Resource persons of national and international level will give lecture to participants. Dr. Jayaram, Senior Scientist from IIT Kharagpur, Dr. S Sengupta, Dr. S Choudhary from Kolkata, Dr. S Rohatgi from North Bengal University (NBU), Dr. K Pathak from Indian Institute Of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, Dr. Ashok Sen, Mr. Pradeep Kumar (Forest Department, Sikkim), Mr. LP Sharma from Sikkim, Prof. MK Ghosh from SMIT, Majhitaar, and Mrs. R Pradhan, Mr. Rohit Bhatnagar, Mr. B Sen, Mr. S Mishra, Mr. Bhusan Chettri and Mr. M Pradhan will take part in the programme which will be concluded on November 23.
