717 SMU students awarded degrees during 9th convocation
GANGTOK, November 8: The Chairman of Indian Space Research Organization Dr G. Madhavan Nair today said that the contribution of the young graduates is vital in the coming years to see India as an emerging global power.
Addressing the 9th convocation of Sikkim Manipal University held at the auditorium of Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences at 5th Mile, Tadong, few kilometres from here today, Dr. Nair, said, “We should work on our strengths and core competence to capture the global market for innovative Indian products and services, and ensure that we do not become passive receptors of foreign technology or end up in marketing others’ technologies and products.”
“The world around us is facing fast technological advancements and at the same time is facing a number of challenges posed by increased population, climate changes, issues like global warming,” the leading technologist in the field of rocket systems said adding “the knowledge and the skills are the essential capitals which can play the most important role in addressing the issues as such”.
Dr. Nair, who won India’s second highest civilian honour, Padma Vibhushan in 2009 was present as the chief guest of the convocation here.
While addressing the convocation, Sikkim Governor BP Singh, also the SMU Chancellor congratulated the students for the successful completion of their courses. Stating that nothing stands more important than education in the 21st century, he said, the real journey of the professional career of he students starts now and that they should always follow the code of hard work, perseverance and dedication towards their duties. At the same time, he appreciated SMU in imparting quality professional education to the students. “The 9th convocation is another stepping stone in the success story of SMP,” the Governor said.
The Chairman of Sikkim Knowledge Commission and also the advisor of Manipal Education Group, K Sreedhar Rao said, the day marks a new and exciting chapter in the lives of the students when they will be stepping out of the collegial and intellectually stimulating environment of this citadel of higher learning into the real world full of contradictions, astounding possibilities ad tough challenges.
Earlier, the Vice Chancellor SMU Brig S. Pabla presented the annual report of the university while the annual magazine was released by the Governor.
A total of 717 students of various disciplines including Bachelor of Medicines and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), Bachelor in Physiotherapy (BPT), BSc Nursing, Bachelor of Technology (B Tech), Masters of Computer Applications (MCA) and Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) of Sikkim Manipal University were today awarded with the certificate of degrees during the 9th convocation.
Also present on the occasion were State Human Resource Development Minister NK Pradhan, the Vice-Chancellor of Sikkim University Dr. Mahdendra P Lama and others.
