Gangtok, November 5: The Press Club of Sikkim (PCS) has strongly condemned the rough treatment and arrest of journalist Deepak Gurung by Geyzing police today. Gurung is the West district correspondent of English daily, Sikkim Now!.
Gurung who was covering bear sighting incident at Geyzing today was subjected to a rough treatment and taken into police custody.
The PCS termed the manner in which the reporter was treated as an undesired hurdle to the growth of healthy journalism in the State.
Journalists must be allowed to collect information and cover the happenings in the State in a secure environment and anyone who is creating hurdles in the functioning of a journalist is an attempt to suppress information, said PCS president Paras Mani Dangal in a press statement.
Barring news and issues concerning the national security, the media in the nation have the freedom to cover events and inform the people and it is unfortunate that the Geyzing police have acted in this fashion, said the PCS president.
The PCS has demanded an administrative probe into the incident and also demanded disciplinary action against those involved in the journalist manhandling incident at Geyzing.
