“Sikkim deserves Green Bonus”, opines Himalayan Chief Ministers’ Conclave
01 Nov, Gangtok: Sikkim’s efforts on climate change were highly appreciated in the two days’ Himalayan Chief Ministers Conclave on Indian Himalayan Glaciers, Climate and Livelihood concluded on 31st Oct 2009 at Shimla, Himachal Pradesh.
The Conclave declared that “Sikkim Model may be adopted at the National level and that Sikkim deserves green bonus” under the green bonus scheme announced by the Union Minister of State for Environment and Forest, Jairam Ramesh, as “Sikkim is number one State in the country for its performance in sustainable development and protection of forest”.
The two-day workshop dealt with various issues pertaining to the present state of Indian Himalayas to find ways and means to preserve and save the eco-system of Himalyas. The Conclave agreed on establishment of Himalayan Sustainable Development Forum, setting up State Councils for Climate Change, catalyzing research for policy action, payment for ecosystem services, managing water resourses, sustainable development, challenges of urbanisation, green transportation, dealing with impacts of Climate Change on livelihoods, decentralised energy security, managing growth of eco-friendly tourisim and pilgrimage, green industry and green job creation etc.
The Conclave was attended by the Union Minister of State Jairam Ramesh, Chief Ministers of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarkhand, Ministers from Himalayan States, a large number of Environmentalists including Dr Sunita Narayanan, Director, Centre for Science and Environment. (With IPR input)
