Sikkim tops in road accident deaths among NE States

SE-GANGTOK, July 24: The Himalayan State has topped the list in road accident deaths among the North Eastern States with 14.9 percent on average every year.
This statistics is based on the national crime records bureau (NCRB) of 2007. Although the figure is far less in comparison to other states in India, Sikkim has topped the list among other North Eastern states.
Assam records, 13.3 percent after Sikkim. However Nagaland is one of the NE states with a minimum of 6.0 percent much below the national level.
According to the bureau, Sikkim has 71.2 percent high accidental prone areas on the basis of the percentage share of deaths due to unnatural causes.
Speaking with SIKKIM EXPRESS, the Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic) TS Tonyot said the systematized traffic system in Sikkim for the past two years have been an important factor in controlling the occurrence of the road accidents. “Sikkim Traffic Police is ensuing safe and smooth flow of traffic on the roads, preventing road accidents and bringing about effective enforcement of traffic rules and regulations. This is to inculcate a sense of discipline amongst road users and educating the general public including school children on Road Safety,” Mr. Tonyot added.
Stating that over speed and over loaded vehicles are the two major factors that cause accidents, the ASP said civic sense of traffic rules amongst the drivers have gone high which has made the enforcement of the traffic rules more efficient and accessible.
