No health hazards from mobile towers: IT Ministry
SE-GANGTOK, July 24: Sikkim MP OT Lepcha on Thursday placed his questions in the Rajya Sabha regarding whether mobile towers are great health hazard to the people and the steps being taken by the Centre in this regard.
The Minister of State for Ministry of Communications & Information Technology, Gurudas Kamat replied that the World Health Organization states that so far no adverse short or long term health effects have been shown to occur from the RF signals produced by the base stations. Since wireless networks produce generally lower RF signals than base stations, no adverse health effects are expected from exposure to them, he said.
It is further informed that the report of the committee constituted to study the effects of radiation from mobile towers and related aspects by the Indian Council of Medical Research opined that overall there is no enough evidence to show the direct health hazards of RF exposures from mobile base stations, said Mr. Kamat. He added that the epidemical studies on exposed workers and the general public have shown no major health effects associated with typical exposure environments.
