PCS OBSERVES ‘MEDIA SOLIDARITY DAY’

Freedom of Press is the foundation of free Government for free People: CJ.The Press Club of Sikkim (PCS) today observed ‘Media Solidarity Day’ here at Nepali Sahitya Parishad with an objective to promote solidarity among the media persons working in Sikkim and to present a united face against its adversaries.
The theme of the occasion was ‘Role of State in Safeguarding Media’.
Speaking on the theme, Sikkim High Court Chief Justice Aftab Hussain Saika who was the chief guest for the programme said the subject for the day was very important and befitting the occasion.
Elaborating the theme, the Chief Justice sensitized the gathering that all powers and safeguards in a democracy originate from the Constitution. The term ‘State’ and its responsibilities have been defined in the Constitution and the State has to protect the citizens of the country, he said. The Chief Justice also touched on the issue of ‘Freedom of Expression’ under Article 19 and its Constitutional and legal interpretations.
